We learned that when counting a large amount, sets of 10 work the best. We had to make sure that our sets were counted accurately (ten in each). We decided to organize our small groups into columns of ten groups of ten (that's 100 in each column!) so that it would be easy to count. Then we found that ten columns of ten equals 1000.
We noticed that if we were to add just 4 more units (ones) the number would change to 1300. The units would turn into a rod and the rods would turn into a flat.
Place Value is important when understanding numbers!
